Pitts can produce big Week 3
Just remember, it is a long season. Those are my words of wisdom before I get to my random thoughts for the week. Things tend to even out, especially when it comes to really good or below average fantasy players. There are always peaks and valleys throughout a season. Don’t get too down or up based on just a couple games. You can make bad decisions as a fantasy owner if you do this.
Now for my random thoughts for the week . . . . .
It is a little surprising the Panthers are benching Bryce Young. He has been awful but you have to wonder what this is going to do for him. Will he learn from the bench? Or will this set back his development? At this point, it just doesn’t seem Young is ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He makes poor reads, holds onto the ball too long and just misses on throws he should make. Young has made next to no progress since entering the league last season. This miss could setback the Panthers franchise even more.
I really don’t want any part of the Chiefs backfield right now. If I had to choose one player, I’m going with Samaje Perine. I think he has the most three-down potential of the group but am not confident with using him. I really think this will be a hot-hand situation, rotating backs in and out of the lineup. It will be a tough fantasy situation to trust from week to week while Isiah Pacheco is out of the lineup.
Kyler Murray is back. He looks like the Kyler Murray before his ACL injury. He is extending plays and making good decisions. Plus, he is running the ball better, having 55-plus rushing yards each of his first two games. It seems we might have underestimated this Cardinals offense a little. It is looking good right now, mainly because of the resurgence of Murray.
I think the Saints are for real. This is a pretty complete team on both sides of the ball. And the offense is rolling, having one of the top running games in all of football. This just opens up things for everything, including Derek Carr and the passing game. And the defense has plenty of firepower on that side of the ball. The Saints are going to be a problem all season long.
I’m a little concerned about Anthony Richardson. He gets to throw behind the best offensive line in football, but is still missing on way too many passes. A lot of quarterbacks would kill to throw behind that Colts stout offensive line. Richardson is not taking full advantage and needs to shore up his accuracy in a hurry if he hopes to be a top quarterback in this league. Richardson still has fantasy value because of his ability to make plays with his legs but he won’t reach his potential if he keeps missing on easy throws. His accuracy remains a concern.
In his last 11 games, Patrick Mahomes has more than 20 fantasy points just three times and his high during that stretch is 23.8 fantasy points. He has not been the elite fantasy quarterback lately. You can’t count out Mahomes but his recent stretch is a little concerning. He just has not been the elite fantasy quarterback you expect. Hopefully, he gets out of this stretch soon. It is just surprising to see his production down.
Rookie Brock Bowers is already a must start for me. He has been heavily involved in the passing game, having 17 targets in two games. He has 11-plus fantasy points each of his first two games. Bowers is going to be a star in this league for years to come. He has a real chance to be the Sam LaPorta of this year. Bowers has that kind of talent.
The Tua Tagovailoa situation is a rough one. You have to feel for him right now. From a fantasy perspective, the Dolphins offense is a concern with Skylar Thompson starting. This is going to impact everything. He is raw and needs plenty of seasoning. I expect plenty of growing pains for him, hurting the value of both the receivers and running backs. You can’t bench guys like Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle but get ready to be disappointed by some bad showings. Not good.
News and Notes: The Panthers have benched quarterback Bryce Young. Andy Dalton has been named the starter. . . .The Chiefs signed running back Kareem Hunt to their practice squad on Tuesday. He could work his way into the lineup if he shows well in practice. . . . .Cincinnati signed defensive lineman Lawrence Guy on Tuesday. The Bengals are dealing with all sorts of injuries along the defensive line, so Guy could make an immediate impact. . . .The Giants signed kicker Greg Joseph off the Lions practice squad. He will take over the kicking duties for the Giants while Graham Gano is out.
HOT PLAYS
Jordan Mason, RB, 49ers. Mason continues to show well as a starter for the 49ers. He has hit the 100-yard rushing mark each of his first two games. He also has found the end zone each of those games, topping 17 fantasy points. He is a must start and legit No. 1 back as long as Christian McCaffrey is out of the lineup. He should keep up his hot ways this week against the Rams, a team that has really struggled to stop the run without Aaron Donald in the middle of their line. The Rams have allowed the fifth most fantasy points to running backs through two games.
Kyle Pitts, TE, Falcons. Pitts has been pretty ho hum once again to start this season outside of his touchdown in Week 1. His numbers have been very similar through two games, having six receptions for 46 yards on the season. He has been targeted seven times. The Falcons passing game came to life late in last week’s game, though, which bodes well for Pitts going forward. His numbers could start improving, especially this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City has been awful against the pass, allowing the most fantasy points to tight ends to start the season. This could be a big week for Pitts.
Jameson Williams, WR, Lions. Williams showed last week that his huge Week 1 wasn’t a fluke. He followed that with another very good performance, catching five passes for 79 yards on 11 targets. He has been targeted 20 times in two games and has a rush attempt in each game. Williams is becoming a legit low-end No. 1 or top No. 2 fantasy receiver. He looks like a different player out there. Look for him to keep up his hot ways this week against the Cardinals, a team that allows the ninth most fantasy points to receivers.
Joe Burrow, QB, Bengals. Burrow got going last week after a poor showing in Week 1. He topped 20 fantasy points and threw for 258 yards with two touchdowns. The Bengals offense played better and Burrow looked as healthy as he has been in a while. Look for Burrow to build on that solid play this week against the Commanders. Washington allows the most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season.
Travis Etienne, RB, Jaguars. Etienne has failed to top 55-rushing yards each of his first two games but found the end zone each of those games. The scores have given Etienne decent fantasy numbers despite not so great yardage totals. He has 12-plus fantasy points each of his first two games. He continues to play a ton for the Jaguars, playing at least 70 percent of the snaps both games. If he gets his usual workload this week against the Bills, look for his best game of the season. Buffalo has allowed the second most fantasy points to running backs and 131.5-rushing yards per game.
COLD PLAYS
Anthony Richardson, QB, Colts. Richardson is off to an erratic start to the season. He is missing on some throws he should make, causing for down fantasy production if he doesn’t do a lot on the ground running the ball. It could be more of the same for Richardson this week against a very good Bears defense. Chicago allows the seventh fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks and gives up just 169.5-passing yards per game. If you have better options, go with them in Week 3.
Mike Evans, WR, Bucs. Evans had just three receptions for 42 yards last week. He has eight receptions for 103 yards in two games. Chris Godwin has been getting more of the looks in the passing game and producing big. Evans remains a factor in this offense but could have another disappointing showing this week against the Broncos. He should draw shutdown corner Patrick Surtain in coverage, which isn’t good news for Evans. Plus, the Broncos allow the fewest fantasy points to receivers.
Any Cowboys running back. The Cowboys are pretty much splitting the backfield with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle. Deuce Vaughn did get a few more chances last week, though, and could get more going forward with Elliot and Dowdle doing little. The Cowboy ran 21 times for just 68 yards last week and have failed to top 100-rushing yards in either of their two games. We would just steer clear of any Cowboys back at this point. It isn’t worth the risk. The ceilings of these players just isn’t very high, especially this week against a Ravens defense that is first overall against the run. Baltimore allows just 49.5-rushing yards per game.
Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs. Mahomes is winning games and making plays, but his fantasy production has not been great. This actually dates back to last season late in the year as well. He just hasn’t produced the huge fantasy games you are accustomed to with Mahomes. He has fewer than 20 fantasy points each of his first two games this year. It is so tough to bench Mahomes because of his huge weekly ceiling but it might be another ho-hum showing for Mahomes in Week 3. He gets a very good Chargers secondary, a team that allows the fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks.
Aaron Jones, RB, Vikings. Jones had a game to forget last week. He was outplayed by backup Ty Chandler and lost a fumble at the goal line. Jones ran nine times for just 32 yards. He isn’t going to lose his job or anything, but Chandler could eat into his playing time a little more. Jones is still going to have some big games, but one of those might not be this week against the Texans. Houston allows the third fewest fantasy points to running backs and are seventh overall against the run.
SLEEPERS
Alexander Mattison, RB, Raiders. Mattison has just 13 touches his first two games but has touchdowns each of the first two games. Mattison took more of a backseat to Zamir White last week but he wasn’t very good with his chances. This could open the door for Mattison to play this week. And if that happens, he could do some damage to the lowly Panthers. Carolina allows the fourth most fantasy points to running backs and has been dreadful defensively this season.
Rashod Bateman, WR, Ravens. Bateman hasn’t done a whole lot to start the season, but has about seven fantasy points each of his first two games. He is more than capable of a game with double-digit fantasy points, especially this week against the Cowboys. This seems a good match for Bateman, playing against a Cowboys secondary that has some injury issues. We expect the Cowboys to do all they can to take away Zay Flowers and Mark Andrews, leaving more favorable matchups for Bateman.
Sam Darnold, QB, Vikings. Darnold is off to a strong start as the Vikings starter, having multiple scores each of his first two games. He scored 23.6 fantasy points last week against a good 49ers defense in the Vikings upset victory. Darnold is looking like a solid spot starter for fantasy teams. And this week could be a time to use him, playing the Texans. Houston allows the eighth most fantasy points to quarterbacks.
D’Andre Swift, RB, Bears. Swift has been a disaster to start the season. He has 24 carries of just 48 yards, averaging two yards per carry. The Bears offensive line is a mess, causing all sorts of issues for both the running and passing games. If the Bears are ever going to have a good week rushing the ball, this is the week. The Bears play the Colts, a team dead last against the run. The Colts allow 237-rushing yards per game. Give Swift a shot in this matchup to get right.
Demarcus Robinson, WR, Rams. The Rams are devastated by injury at receiver. If we had to pick an option to consider using going forward, it would be Robinson. He seems the best bet for consistent production and the Rams clearly believe in him. His stats aren’t anything special each of his first two games, but Robinson is playing a ton. He has played 92 percent of the snaps each of his first two games. He could be a sneaky play this week against the 49ers, a team that allows the fourth most fantasy points to receivers.
High/Low Scoring Games
Each week we will take a look at some of the high and low scoring games for the coming week. In high scoring affairs, get your marginal players on those teams in your lineup to take advantage of the possible points barrage. And in the low scoring games, keep those marginal players on the bench and make sure to have your defenses involved in those contests.
High Scoring Games: Texans/Vikings, Eagles/Saints, Lions/Cardinals, Chiefs/Falcons.
Low Scoring Games: Patriots/Jets, Bears/Colts, Broncos/Bucs, Giants/Browns, Chargers/Steelers, Packers/Titans, Panthers/Raiders.

Hot Plays, Fades and Sleepers: Week 5
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs (personal) was absent for the second straight practice on Friday. Doubs remains away from the team due to a personal matter. Head coach Matt LaFleur said the organization is hopeful to get Doubs back in time for Sunday's game. If not, Bo Melton could be asked to take on a bigger role with the Packers already shorthanded at wideout. Melton hauled in one of his three targets for 28 yards last week. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks figure to benefit the most in the receiving game.
From RotoBaller
Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku (ankle) is considered questionable for the Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders. Njoku has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury during the season opener. He returned to practice last week, but was ultimately ruled out for Week 4. Njoku practiced on Wednesday and appears to be headed in the right direction. If active, Njoku should be considered a low-end TE1 for Week 5. Otherwise, Jordan Akins figures to make another start, but he was held to one reception on two targets last week. Akins doesn't offer much upside right now, so fantasy managers should look elsewhere for help if Njoku is sidelined again.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (knee) has been removed from the injury report ahead of the Week 5 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The veteran signal-caller sat out of Wednesday's practice, but returned to the field on Thursday and Friday. That being said, Rodgers will be fine heading into their matchup in London. This isn't an ideal matchup for the Jets against a tough Vikings defense that is allowing less than 15 points per game. Rodgers will be on the lower end of the QB2 radar for this weekend.

Dynasty | Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 19-of-24 passes for 180 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a loss against Atlanta. Dynasty Analysis: With 11 touchdowns, two interceptions, and 1,164 passing yards through four weeks, it's clear Mayfield's resurgence last year was no fluke. He's in complete control of the offense and is a QB1 option moving forward. While his age (29) dampens his dynasty value, he's turning into more than just a streaming option. You simply have to wonder just how much the Browns regret moving on from Mayfield in favor of an expensive and ineffective Deshaun Watson.
Dynasty | Bucs running back Bucky Irving had 44 rushing yards, two catches and 12 receiving yards in a loss against Atlanta. Dynasty Analysis: #timeshare. With Rachaad White (66 yards on 13 touches), this has officially turned into a 50/50 timeshare with the two running backs. Irving clearly has more juice, but White has also been effective at times this season. This looks like great news for the Bucs, but a frustrating development in dynasty leagues. At this point, each of these runners is a Flex play at best unless the other misses time. Irving is a solid dynasty hold at the moment.
Dynasty | Bucs receiver Mike Evans had five catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns in a loss against Atlanta. Dynasty Analysis: Yep. Just another day, week, month, and season at the office forming for Evans, who is clearly warming up and on pace for his 11th straight 1,000 yard season. While his career is on the back-end of the slope, he remains a prime trade target for contending teams and his consistency continues to be undervalued.
Dynasty | Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 42-of-58 passes for 509 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in a win against Tampa Bay. Dynasty Analysis: With the Falcons seemingly playing catch-up most of the night, Cousins just started dealing. His first month was sub-par at best as he threw for around 800 yards and four touchdowns in his first four games. Thursday night was different as he nearly doubled his fantasy output in one night. We can hope this is a sign of things to come as he comes back from a season-ending injury, but we'll need to see a few more weeks before trusting him as a true QB1.
Dynasty | Falcons receiver Drake London had 12 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons come-from-behind overtime win against Tampa Bay. Dynasty Analysis: Kirk Cousins struggled mightily the first month of the season, but London was somehow able to salvage some decent value in the short-term. Tonight was different as Cousins unleashed 58 pass attempts and targeted London 13 times on the night. While we need to see more before locking in London as a true WR1, he's certainly good enough to be a solid weekly starter moving forward.
Dynasty | Falcons receiver Darnell Mooney had nine catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns in Atlanta's win against Tampa Bay. Dynasty Analysis: Mooney was targeted a whopping 16 times in this one and has quickly emerged as a focal point of Atlanta's offense. With a surprising 40 targets over the first five weeks, Mooney looks nothing like the anemic 2023 version of himself who posted a 31/414/1 line for the Bears. At this point, he deserves weekly consideration in dynasty leagues and his value is very much on the rise yet again.
Dynasty | Falcons running back Bijan Robinson had 61 rushing yards, three catches and 16 receiving yards in a win against Tampa Bay. Dynasty Analysis: The line itself isn't horrible. However, when you consider the Falcons scored 36 points and Tyler Allgeier had another nine touches (Robinson had 15), anger starts to set in for dynasty managers. It's clear at this point Robinson is just not going to be used as the engine of the Falcons offense and simply one of many options. With just 285 rushing yards (on 4.3 yards per carry), 18 catches, 151 receiving yards and one lone touchdown on the year, this is shaping up to be another pedestrian year for a player many hoped would become a truly elite RB1 this season. Robinson's dynasty star is going to start fading soon.
Dynasty | Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts had seven catches for 88 yards in a win against Tampa Bay. Dynasty Analysis: It only took Kirk Cousins throwing the ball 58 times (and posting the 15th highest single-game passing yardage total in league history) to unlock the potential of Pitts. Even with all that, Drake London and Darnell Mooney still had 29 targets combined to lead the way, compared to the eight for Pitts. While this was a good bounce-back, he still seems to be a secondary option in an offense seemingly determined to fail to get two of their best players (Pitts and Bijan Robinson) the football. Pitts is still a TE1 in dynasty leagues, but that's more because of the inconsistency of the position than his own usage rate.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren (knee) has been ruled out for the second week in a row for Sunday night's contest against the visiting Dallas Cowboys, according to sources. With Warren out again, the Steelers will look to Aaron Shampklin and Jonathan Ward as RB depth behind starter Najee Harris. Even while working in tandem with Harris, Warren was a weekly RB3/flex option for fantasy managers last year. That hasn't been the case so far in 2024 with dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields running the offense. In the three games that Warren has played, he has only 14 carries for 54 yards (career-low 3.9 yards per tote) while catching all five of his targets for only 28 yards. Warren is still rostered in just over 50% of Yahoo leagues, but he obviously belongs on benches yet again in Week 5. With Warren out for the second week in a row, Harris should see plenty of volume in a good matchup, making him a solid RB2 in fantasy.
From RotoBaller
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (abdomen, oblique) is in pads and practicing for the third time this week on Friday. However, The Athletic's James Boyd reports that veteran Joe Flacco is taking most, if not all, of the first-team repetitions in practice as Richardson stands behind Flacco to watch him throw. Richardson was relieved by Flacco in the Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. The 22-year-old's injury isn't believed to be serious, but perhaps they let Flacco make the Week 5 start against the division-rival Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday. Either way, Richardson has fallen to low-end QB1/high-end QB2 territory after a disappointing start to his sophomore season in which he leads the league with six interceptions thrown. Check back for Richardson's final Week 5 status going into Sunday's game. The Colts will also be without star running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) this week.
From RotoBaller
Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb (knee) has officially been ruled out for the Week 5 contest versus the Washington Commanders as he continues to work his way back from a devastating left-knee injury he suffered in Week 2 of 2023. Chubb returned to practice for the first time this year on Wednesday and is being eased back into action. There really isn't a firm timetable for when the 28-year-old might make his 2024 debut, and the Browns could use the full 21-day window to make sure Chubb is fully up to speed before working him back into the backfield on game days. Fantasy managers should have Chubb stashed in all formats, but there's no guarantee he'll return for a Week 6 tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles. In the meantime, Jerome Ford will continue to operate as Cleveland's lead back, with D'Onta Foreman being sprinkled in as a change-of-pace option.
From RotoBaller
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett (thigh) finds himself in the flex conversation once again in Week 5. Lockett has earned at least seven targets in three of four games this season and that volume will keep him fantasy relevant. Unfortunately, Lockett has only cleared 61 yards in one game. He also has yet to score a touchdown after scoring at an incredibly high clip earlier in his career. However, Lockett is still a trusted safety valve for quarterback Geno Smith and will see his fair share of targets even with the emergence of second-year wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Lockett enters a matchup with a New York Giants team that has lost several playmakers in the defensive backfield in recent years. The Seahawks should have no trouble moving up and down the field against this team which could give Lockett his first chance to score this season.
From RotoBaller
Seattle Seahawks tight end Noah Fant (toe) continues to stay off the fantasy radar. After a big Week 3 in which Fant caught six passes for 60 yards, he was back to his usual two catches per game in Week 4. Fant is far from his days in Denver when he was a high-end fantasy starter. He is far more necessary to the Seahawks offense than he is to fantasy teams. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb focuses more on his talented group of wide receivers than Fant, and rightfully so. If you have an extra roster spot than Fant may be worth a stash, but you should not even think about starting him until he proves any kind of fantasy worth.
From RotoBaller
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is a solid play at quarterback in Week 5. He is coming off a game in which he threw for 395 yards and a touchdown. A late interception dampened the day, but the output was huge. Smith has thrown for exactly one touchdown in all four games this season. This Seahawks offense feels like it is on the cusp of an explosion which could come in Week 5. Smith should have a chance to finally break through with a multiple-touchdown game. He should also push for 250 or more passing yards. Smith has been serviceable all year which is evidenced by his current standing as the QB9 in fantasy. If you need a bye-week fill-in for Jalen Hurts or Jared Goff, or you have an underperforming starter such as Patrick Mahomes, then Smith is a fine option to deploy.
From RotoBaller
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said that tight end T.J. Hockenson (knee) was limited in his return to practice on Friday, but he has been ruled out for Week 5 against the New York Jets and will not come off the Physically Unable to Perform list just yet. The Vikings opened Hockenson's 21-day practice window on Friday, but he'll have to wait until at least Week 7 against the Detroit Lions -- the Vikings have their bye in Week 6 -- before potentially making his 2024 debut. We'll have a better idea in a few weeks of whether the 27-year-old will be able to return in Week 7 by his practice participation. Hockenson deserves to be stashed in all fantasy formats and should have TE1 utility when he's back in a Vikings offense that has looked great under quarterback Sam Darnold so far in 2024. Until Hockenson returns, fantasy managers can continue to ignore Johnny Mundt.
From RotoBaller
Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers had a tough day in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. Myers missed a long field of 62 yards at the end of the first half and only kicked three extra points to make up for it. It is not every day that kickers attempt career long field goals at the end of the half, so Myers' dud is unlikely to be a trend. Myers should continue his accurate kicking spree in Week 5. Additionally, the Seahawks D/ST should be in plenty of scoring positions all day. Do not be surprised if Myers delivers two to three field goals and two to three extra points. That should be enough for another double-digit fantasy day.
From RotoBaller
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been a two-faced player in 2024. He has two games with 12 or more targets with 13.1 fantasy points in each of those games. He also has two games with three or less targets with 6.9 or less fantasy points in each of those games. His inconsistency makes him difficult to trust but his talent is intriguing. The Seahawks have made it clear that they would like Smith-Njigba to touch the ball far more than he did in 2023. However, whether or not it is by design, the team has not been able to consistently scheme plays for Smith-Njigba. He has a chance to shine against a middle-of-the-road New York Giants defense in Week 5. He should be a flex-play with upside but do not be surprised if he delivers another dud performance.
