Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen wouldn't say definitively that quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) will be cleared by next month but he "should be" after missing most of his rookie season in 2023 with an AC joint sprain that required season-ending surgery. "I know he's super fired up and ready to roll through the spring practice and training camp and this season," Steichen said. The 21-year-old had surgery on Oct. 24 and began throwing last month. This year in training camp, Richardson will take all of the starting reps while Joe Flacco serves as his backup. Having his role clearly defined at this stage of the offseason, as well as another year in the same system, should make Richardson feel more comfortable than he did as a rookie. His brief showing in 2023 gave fantasy managers a quick glimpse into his high-end QB1 upside, mainly because of his elite rushing abilities.

The Indianapolis Colts re-signed backup center Jack Anderson to a one-year deal ahead of 2024 free agency. Originally a 2021 seventh-round pick by the Buffalo Bills out of Texas Tech, Anderson has played in 15 games with three starts between his time with the Colts, Bills, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Eagles. He did not log a snap in 2023. Starting center Ryan Kelly is one of the best players at his position, so this is simply a depth-solidifying move for the organization that aims to protect second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson in 2024.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is throwing again after suffering a Grade 3 AC joint sprain in October that required surgery. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft flashed fantasy upside early in his career, averaging 23.1 fantasy points per game through his first three starts. However, he suffered a concussion and a major shoulder injury before making it to Week 6. The 6'4" signal-caller has elite physical traits, but he'll have to find a way to stay healthy to live up to his potential. With Richardson already throwing in February, he's likely to be one of the first 10 quarterbacks off the board in 2024 fantasy drafts due to his rushing upside.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson's (shoulder) rookie season in 2023 was cut short by an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder that required surgery, but he's hoping to resume throwing in the near future, ahead of his doctors' projections. The Colts would have preferred that Richardson played the season out after drafting him fourth overall, but sitting out could actually benefit the young QB in the long term. "He got a chance to sit back, watch and learn. I had some good meetings with him throughout the season, just individually, me and him, sitting down talking football. Just seeing the NFL season as a whole," head coach Shane Steichen said. The 21-year-old should be ready well ahead of training camp this summer, and his combination of size and speed at the QB position will give him clear QB1 upside as Indy's quarterback of the future.

Jan 18 7:00pm ET

Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) only played in four games in his first year in the NFL in 2023 due to a shoulder injury that eventually required season-ending surgery, but in that small sample size he managed to impress the team with his throwing ability, which had been a question mark coming into the draft. "Here's this big, talented athlete. I mean, this guy is a legitimate passer, and I believe that. I think he's going to continue to get better and improve the more he plays. But Anthony can play from the pocket and throw the ball accurately," general manager Chris Ballard said. Richardson threw a catchable pass on 85.7% of his 84 pass attempts, which align with Brock Purdy's numbers for the full season. Despite only playing in four games his rookie year, Richardson is going to be an attractive QB1 with upside heading into fall fantasy drafts.

Dynasty | Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has indicated he doesn't plan on changing his playing style moving forward. Dynasty Analysis: Richardson made it through just four games this year before needing season-ending surgery. He should be healthy and ready for next season but there are legitimate questions in regards to his future. While he still doesn't have a lengthy injury history, he dealt with a number of ailments this season before being lost for the year. The comparisons to Robert Griffin III are premature but it's clear Richardson will need to exercise some more caution moving forward to avoid the same fate. He remains a top ten option at the position moving forward.

Dynasty | Colts running back Jonathan Taylor had 188 rushing yards and a touchdown in the Colts loss to Houston. Dynasty Analysis: The Colts failed to make the playoffs but don't blame Taylor. While he's been passed up by a few other running backs this year due to some injury concerns, Taylor has still been dominant on the field when available, finishing the season with 741 rushing yards, 19 catches, 153 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in just ten games. Durability and the long-term future of Anthony Richardson will be the keys to his short-term future but Taylor will clearly be on the RB1 line this off-season.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) has been sidelined since suffering a significant shoulder injury that required surgery in Week 5 of the 2023 campaign. After a promising start to his rookie year, his season was over quickly. However, the 21-year-old said he thinks he's ahead of schedule in the rehab process. "I think I'm progressing way faster than everyone thought," Richardson said. "They said 16 weeks after the surgery, but hopefully, I'm trying to push to get (back) before that." He said he hopes he can start throwing next month. Either way, he will not return for a potential playoff push, but it's a promising sign for his future outlook. Given his elite rushing ceiling, it would be surprising if he's not a consensus QB1 in 2024 fantasy drafts.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay announced on his Twitter account that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) had successful surgery on his right shoulder in Los Angeles to fix a Grade 3 AC joint sprain. Doctors didn't find anything new or surprising during the surgery and just repaired what was expected. There is currently no timetable for the first-rounder's return, but we know that he will miss the rest of his rookie season. The 21-year-old has tremendous upside in real life and fantasy football, but he could become injury-prone if he continues to run at a high rate. Richardson's athleticism is off the charts. He will be in the QB1 conversation going into the 2024 season and should be ready for Week 1. Gardner Minshew will continue to be an option in two-QB superflex leagues the rest of this year as the Colts' starter.

Dynasty | Updating the earlier report, Anthony Richardson is electing to undergo season ending shoulder surgery Dynasty Analysis: Richardson has is now fully aware of the difference between college and the NFL and will have time on the sidelines to further study and develop. It's not expected that the Colts phenom rookie will drastically change his style of play, built upon his size and mobility, but he will need to use more prudence to take fewer hits to extend his career.

Oct 18 11:40am ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. The talented rookie suffered the shoulder injury in the Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans and was quickly placed on Injured Reserve. The 21-year-old was only able to play in four games, and he left three contests early. Still, he racked up 577 passing yards, 136 rushing yards, and seven total touchdowns. The No. 4 overall pick showed glimpses of his elite rushing ceiling, which will likely make him a highly drafted fantasy quarterback in 2024. Gardner Minshew, barring an injury, is expected to be to Colts' starter for the remainder of the 2023 campaign.

Dynasty | Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has likely been lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Dynasty Analysis: Well, that was fun. The news comes straight from Colts owner Jim Irsay, so the source is obviously reliable. Richardson showed major promise in spurts this year but it's going to be fair to wonder how he's going to hold up long-term after leaving three of four games due to injury this season. The Colts are going to need to re-tool their offensive line and re-assess how they are going to deploy their young signal caller moving forward. This news will move Richardson down our rankings and his ranking of QB8 will likely move into the teens as a result.

Oct 16 9:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) looks to be trending toward missing the rest of the regular season. Colts owner Jim Irsay said that the rookie will "probably" miss the rest of the regular season and "could" undergo shoulder surgery in the next week or so. There's no definite word just yet, but the direction that the situation is headed isn't great. If Richardson does, in fact, miss the rest of the season, then Gardner Minshew will be a hotter commodity moving forward. Fantasy managers will want to stay tuned to hear if the surgery will be definite.

Oct 15 8:20am ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) "is strongly considering season-ending shoulder surgery on his damaged AC joint," according to a report from NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Richardson injured himself in Week 5, was quickly ruled out, and eventually landed on short-term injured reserve. While this move leaves the door open for the Florida product to return in 2023, a surgery would sideline him for the remainder of his rookie campaign. According to Rapoport, Richardson received at least four different medical opinions on his injury and surgery was "deemed by some as the best option to fully heal his right throwing shoulder." He also reports that Richardson's right labrum is not torn and his ligaments look better than expected. Nevertheless, it looks like the first-round pick could have a significant road to recovery ahead of him. Gardner Minshew will quarterback Indianapolis in the interim.

Oct 11 11:10am ET

Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder), who was placed on Injured Reserve on Wednesday, is expected to miss four to eight weeks, depending on his rehab and whether he would still need surgery on his right shoulder, according to a source. Richardson suffered an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder in the Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans and is now going to be out for a while. The talented 21-year-old signal-caller deserves to be stashed in all fantasy formats for now, as he should be able to make a return later in the year. Until then, veteran Gardner Minshew will lead the Colts' offense and will be in play in two-QB leagues for the foreseeable future.

Oct 11 10:20am ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) was placed on Injured Reserve Wednesday, meaning he will be required to miss at least the next four games. It's a tough break for the 21-year-old, who already missed a game with a concussion this season. Richardson has played well in his limited action, scoring three passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns with just one interception in four game appearances. Gardner Minshew will lead the Colts offense against at least the Jaguars, Browns, Saints, and Panthers over the next four weeks. In the three games in which Minshew has thrown at least three passes this season, the Colts have come away with a win.

Oct 9 10:20pm ET

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters on Monday that rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) will miss "some time" after suffering a sprained AC joint in the Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans. Richardson could miss even more time, too, as he was initially diagnosed with a Grade 3 sprain. The 21-year-old is seeking a second opinion, but don't be surprised if the Colts eventually put him on Injured Reserve, which would require him to miss at least four games. It's a tough blow for the Colts and fantasy managers that had been riding with the fourth overall pick as their QB1 in his first NFL season. Gardner Minshew will start under center for Indy in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and for however long Richardson is sidelined.

Oct 9 11:10am ET

Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is seeking a second opinion from renowned shoulder specialist Dr. Keith Meister, according to a source. Richardson is expected to miss the Week 6 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with what is believed to be a sprained AC joint. The 21-year-old initially received a diagnosis of a Grade 3 AC joint sprain, which would knock him out of action for a month or more. In that case, the fourth overall pick of this year's NFL draft could be headed for a stint on Injured Reserve. We'll see what a second opinion brings, but fantasy managers should expect Richardson to miss more than one game moving forward. Backup Gardner Minshew will become a low-end QB2 option in superflex leagues.

Oct 9 9:10am ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is believed to have suffered a Grade 3 AC joint sprain. If an MRI confirms the diagnosis, the rookie could be out a month or more. A stint on injured reserve then becomes a legitimate option. The first-round pick exited the Colts contest against Tennessee in the second quarter and did not return. Gardner Minshew led the Colts to a victory in the second half and would be the guy under center moving forward. When on the field, Richardson has given fantasy managers reasons to celebrate but this is now his third injury (knee, concussion) to begin the season.

Oct 8 5:10pm ET

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (shoulder) has been diagnosed with an AC joint sprain after X-rays came back negative, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The rookie had completed nine of 12 passes for 98 yards and also added five rushing yards prior to departing the contest. Gardner Minshew took over at quarterback for the remainder of Week 5 and would be in line to start next Sunday versus the Jaguars if Richardson can't play.
