Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has been able to salvage his fantasy value by finding the end zone through the first two weeks of the season. Last week, Montgomery struggled with 35 yards on 11 rushing attempts in the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Luckily, Montgomery was able to save his value with a touchdown on the ground and four receptions through the air helped as well. He figures to continue splitting up the workload with fellow back Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery has seen 11 or more attempts on the ground through the first two games. He should continue to remain a significant part of the offense during the Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The 27-year-old should be a fine RB2 against a shaky Cardinals defense.

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery had 11 carries for 35 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Iowa State product also caught all four of his targets for 35 yards through the air. Even with Montgomery's production being poor and Jahmyr Gibbs getting more looks, the former third-round pick got the lone touchdown of the Detroit backfield. With this being what fantasy managers drafted him for, they should have nothing to worry about after a good week from Montgomery. He also had more receptions Sunday than in any game during the 2023 season. Montgomery will look to build on Sunday's performance and is a mid-range RB2 against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery rushed 11 times for just 35 yards in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he had a rushing score. He also added four receptions for 35 yards on four targets.

Fantasy Spin: Montgomery had 15 total touches to 20 for Jahmyr Gibbs, and the latter was more productive in the run game with 6.5 yards per attempt. But Montgomery continues to see a decent share of the backfield touches, and he remains a solid RB2 in most fantasy leagues heading into Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery will look to continue his strong performance in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who boast a tough run defense. In Week 1, Montgomery impressed with 91 rushing yards on 17 attempts, averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and scored the game-winning touchdown. He again led in touches over Jahmyr Gibbs, with a 20-15 split, though Gibbs scored earlier in the game on a rare goal-line carry. The Buccaneers' defense is anchored by elite run-stopper Vita Vea, and only seven running backs surpassed 60 rushing yards against Tampa Bay last season, with three needing at least 20 carries to do so. Given the strength of the Buccaneers' run defense, the Lions will likely implement a pass-heavy game plan targeting Tampa Bay's banged-up secondary. While it's promising that quarterback Jayden Daniels and running back Brian Robinson found success on the ground against the Buccaneers last week, Montgomery may find it challenging to replicate such a performance. As a running back who isn't heavily involved in the passing game, Montgomery should be considered a low-end RB2 or Flex option. Start him with caution and manage expectations, given the difficult matchup.

Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery rushed 17 times for 91 yards and the game-winning touchdown in overtime in Week 1 versus the Los Angeles Rams. Montgomery also hauled in his only target for two yards.

Fantasy Spin: Montgomery had minimal impact on the game throughout the first 60 minutes, but he carried five times for 45 yards in the extra period against a tired Rams' defense. Detroit appeared to use Montgomery in the near even split with Jahmyr Gibbs, who was allowed to punch in a short score on one of "his" drives in the first half. Montgomery will likely continue to be touchdown-dependent in 2024, although that is not as bad as it sounds since the Lions will likely play with the lead a lot. The 27-year-old figures to be more of a flex option in Week 2 versus the tough run defense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery will square off against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday evening in the team's home opener. The Lions' offense will be at full strength heading into a matchup with the highest projected point total of the weekend (52.5). Detroit has an implied team total of 28 points, and Montgomery has a fantastic chance to get in on the action. Despite running mate Jahmyr Gibbs returning to health leading up to Week 1, it is fair to expect that his workload might be monitored. This would leave the lion's share of backfield touches in the sixth-year back's hands for at least one more week. It is believed by some in the fantasy community that Gibbs may supersede the veteran in the pecking order this season. Whether that is the case or not -- only time will tell. Regardless, both Detroit RBs are excellent plays this week and season-long. Additionally, they both hold baked-in upside if either one were to miss any time. Montgomery is RotoBaller's RB22 in this week's rankings.

Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs should expect to 'see more of a load' in 2024, according to general manager Brad Holmes on a recent appearance of The Rich Eisen Show. 'I definitely would expect him to see more of a load, but David Montgomery will still be here too. Dan (Campbell) and I love that 1-2 punch of him and David. But just speaking on, specifically, him being a rookie last year, even when he had some pops in (last year's season opener), I was watching, I was like, 'He's still trying to get the feel of the game.' He was playing very fast, and he actually kind of needed to slow down a little bit . . . But once he got that sweet spot, you kind of saw it in the (Baltimore) Ravens game, which unfortunately we didn't show up very well for that game, but that's when you started seeing some glimpses of, 'I think it's coming, I think it's coming,' Then, obviously, that (Las Vegas) Raiders game where I believe everyone saw the breakout. . . . I think he has much more to offer in the passing game, so most likely you'll see an increase in that as well,' Holmes said.

Fantasy Spin: Gibbs' dynasty managers have to be loving this quote from the GM. Despite missing two games as a rookie, Gibbs amassed 1,261 yards and 11 touchdowns on 234 touches. He saw at least 12 touches in each of Detroit's three playoff games as well. It bodes very well for him that Detroit is ready to give him more work, as Gibbs could push for overall RB1 production if he is handed (and can handle) 15 to 18 touches on a regular basis.
